Health and Safety Committee

The health and safety of Alberta workers is under constant and increasing attack. With this in mind, the AFL Health and Safety Committee works hard for improved legislation and enhanced enforcement. The Committee also disseminates information and organizes events aimed at increasing public awareness of workplace health and safety issues.

The AFL Health and Safety Committee has a mandate to stay on top of health and safety issues. Its tasks include lobbying government, educating workers across Alberta, organizing events to raise awareness of health and safety, promoting health and safety on Alberta worksites and working with the Alberta Workers' Health Centre.

Members of the Committee represent a wide range of occupations and unions in Alberta. See the list of current committee members.

Projects and Events

The Committee engages in a variety of activities and projects to raise awareness of health and safety issues, from organizing Day of Mourning events, to education and awareness activities. Check back here occasionally to see what the Committee is up to.

154 ReasonsDid you know that Alberta is the only province that does not have mandatory joint health and safety committees? There is clear evidence that joint committees make workplaces safer, yet the Conservatives won't legislate them. The Committee wants to do something about it and have launched a postcard campaign calling on the Alberta government to make joint committees mandatory in all workplaces. And we want you to help! Fill out the pdf version of the card and mail it to the AFL. Or contact the AFL and we will send you a bundle for your workplace.

Day of Mourning, April 28th is the international day to remember workers killed at work. Attend an event in your community, or organize something at your workplace.

Check out Work Plays, sponsored by the Alberta Workers' Health Centre. This play is aimed at high school students highlights the dangers of work and the rights workers have to protect themselves.
