The AFL - Working hard for working people

Unions affiliated with the AFL pay a per capita fee of 83 cents per member per month. Here's a summary of what affiliates get for their dues money.

Voice for Working People
The Alberta Federation of Labour works hard to put working people's issues on the public agenda by lobbying the mainstream media.

Government Lobbyist
Each year, the AFL meets with dozens of politicians and presents briefs to the federal, provincial and local governments in an ongoing effort to influence public policy.

Union Communications
The Federation publishes an award-winning newspaper called Labour News. Labour News examines the major issues of the day from a labour perspective.

Support During Strikes and Disputes
The AFL coordinates and mobilizes support for affiliated unions engaged in labour disputes. This may involve financial or picket line support; assistance with boycotts and "hot cargo" edicts; or assistance with research and media relations.

Labour Education
The Federation sponsors an annual two-week school for union activists. The school offers course in a wide range of areas - all aimed at building stronger and more effective unions.

Labour Research
The AFL conducts ongoing research on economic and social issues. The research is made available to affiliates to support both their work with members and their work at the bargaining table.

Activist Coalitions
The AFL participates in number of coalitions with other unions and community groups. Recent examples include the coalition to oppose private health care (Bill 11); the coalition to increase the minimum wage; and the coalition to reform the WCB.

Pensions
The AFL plays a leading role in defending and improving Alberta's largest public pension program, the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP).

Kids' Camp
The AFL hosts an annual week-long summer camp for the children of union members. It's an opportunity for the kids to enjoy a wide range of summer activities - and learn about unions and social justice at the same time.
