A total of 105 children attended this year's AFL Kids' Camp and enjoyed activities including canyon rappelling, wall climbing, hiking, canoeing, rafting and swimming. They also took part in a game styled after TV's Amazing Race and learned about labour issues, including health and safety at work, through songs, skits and art projects. And there was, of course, a cookout that included making smores over a campfire, and a dance.

The camp, held August 9-13 at the Goldeye Centre, Nordegg, was open to children aged between 8 and 15, who were supervised by 23 adults and junior counsellors, led by Elisabeth Ballermann, President of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta, as camp director.
The AFL would like to thank all the unions who donated materials to be given to the kids. They were much appreciated by all! We would also like to thank the following unions for providing the adult leaders and nurses: HSAA, UNA, CEP 707, UFCW 401, IBEW 424, CUPE 1505, PSAC 30028 and CUPW Edmonton.
Here's what some campers had to say:
"When my mother told me I was going to camp I was really excited because this was the first time I was going to camp. We went for free since the Union paid for us. Camp Goldeye is a fun place. Some of the activities they do are canoeing, repelling, rock-climbing and a few other things. In Union Time, your group talks about the union and other subjects. The cabins are superior with the opening windows. One thing you will love is the amazing race. In it there are 13 stations. Your group has to try to finish all the stations first to get a prize. Camp Goldeye is an awesome place to make friends. If you ever want to go to a camp, go to Camp Goldeye first!" Zainab, Age 9
"Camp Goldeye, being our (me, and my sisters Anam and Zainab) first camp in our entire life turned out to be a remarkable place to stay for a week. Sent by our Union we had the luxury of going to camp, free of charge. The camps many activities engaged us all, providing various activities such as rappelling, canoeing, swimming in the lake, hiking around the lake, rock climbing, high/low ropes. During Union time, the counselors and staff in the camp talked to us about their theme: Health & Safety and different wasys to practice it. Camp Goldeye was a stupendous experience and a great opportunity to make friends. To anyone who wants to go to camp, I recommend this above all."Bilal, Age 11
