We don't often get the chance to talk about the guiding principles of the labour movement. It's not because we've forgotten, or have lost our passion, but rather that we tend to get caught up in our day-to-day work and responsibilities. Solidarity is the foundation upon which our movement was built, but it has shifted and changed over the years - though not necessarily for the worse.
Sometimes, though, it's good to take time to step back and reflect. This issue of Union gives us food for thought on a number of topics: is the solidarity that is our foundation strong enough to weather difficult economic times? Can our unions, and our movement as a whole, use this time to refocus our energies and build our strength?
We ask you, as interested Albertans and labour activists, to think about these questions as you read this issue of Union. And for the first time, we can also invite you to let us know what you think. Union Magazine is going online in a new interactive format on the new Alberta Federation of Labour website. Please just us at www.afl.org to share your thoughts.
I hope you enjoy this issue of Union and look forward to hearing from you.
