A New Tool for Unions

Database Tracks Arbitration Decisions in Alberta

The AFL is offering a service to its affiliates and other unions in the province to help them navigate the choppy waters of arbitration panels. Arbitrations can be tricky and complicated for union locals to handle when defending their members against employer actions.

The AFL maintains an up-to-date, searchable database of all arbitrations decisions in Alberta for union locals preparing for the arbitration process. It is a rich collection of information about arbitrators in the province - how often they rule in favour or against a worker on any given topic, how long they take and so on.

Here are some of the things you can learn from browsing the database:

  • An arbitrator's track record of decisions - favourable to workers or employers
  • A brief summary of decisions
  • Length of time an arbitrator takes to file a decision
  • Which arbitrators are best on particular issues or topics
  • how often a type of case goes in favour of workers

The database is intended as resource for unions beginning the arbitration process, so that they can understand better how arbitrators view an issue (e.g. dismissal cases), and how particular arbitrators approach certain issues.

The database is updated 2 to 3 times a year.

If you are interested in accessing the database, contact the AFL office at 1-800-661-3995 or email us.
