Alberta’s labour movement wraps ups convention ready to stand up for Alberta

EDMONTON – At the 52nd Constitutional Convention of the Alberta Federation of Labour, Gil McGowan was re-elected to president and Karen Kuprys was elected to secretary treasurer of the Alberta Federation of Labour, the previous secretary treasurer, Siobhan Vipond had stepped down.

“The work of pushing back against Jason Kenney’s anti-worker agenda will now kick into high gear. Albertans deserve a better direction for our province, and we in the labour movement are committed to play our part to make sure that happens,” said Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour.

“I am incredibly humbled to be elected to serve as your next AFL Secretary Treasurer. Thank you for all of your support. I have deep respect for all of our members and our labour movement, I will continue to work hard to deserve the trust you have placed in me. In solidarity!” said Karen Kuprys, secretary treasurer of the Alberta Federation of Labour.

Every AFL convention celebrates the work of the Albertan labour movement, and maps out the priorities for working people in the future. In 2021, working Albertans are facing a pandemic while fighting a regressive government trying to take away worker rights and power. Workers and unions balance the scales and fight on issues that matter to Albertans and that’s why the AFL has chosen “Stand up for Alberta: unions and workers leading the fight!” as the 2021 theme.
