How bad is the oil-sands jobs collapse and what should we do about it?

The Alberta Federation of Labour will release a report tomorrow dealing with the employment implications of the recent collapse in oil-sands investment.

The report includes a number of troubling new findings about the scale of oil-sands-related job loss and the possibility of even more serious job loss in the future.

What: AFL to release major new report on oil-sands employment

When: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Where: Lacombe Room, Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe Hotel, 10111 Bellamy Hill, Edmonton

“There’s a sense out there that everything will return to business as usual in the oil sands once the recession ends,” says AFL president Gil McGowan.

“But we clearly can’t make those kinds of assumptions. Our report is a wake-up call for the Alberta government and everyone else who is concerned about the future of our province’s economy and labour market.”
